WILDLIFE AND FISHING
On Sky Trekking Alaska’s uniquely designed, and fully guided itineraries wildlife, fishing and photography are some of our most popular interests for travelers.
Wildlife viewing in Alaska is a major focus during Sky Trekking Adventures. In a place with very few roads, aircraft are a perfect means to view and photograph wildlife in their natural habitat. Each specific region offers a unique selection of wildlife species.
Coastal and marine environments boast Humpback, Fin, Beluga and Orca whales, Pacific Walrus, porpoise, Stellar Sea Lions, harbor seals, and sea otters. There are more bald eagles in Alaska than in the rest of the US. Alaska is a bird watcher’s paradise with more than 470 species identified; many of them rare. The largest Brown Bears in the world are located on Kodiak Island. Brown bear, black bear and grizzly bear are common sights in the coastal regions of South Central Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula. There are literally thousands of miles of shoreline to fly over to look for bears and landing spots are numerous. Moose and caribou are located statewide with Sitka Blacktail deer and Elk located in the southeast and coastal areas of South Central. Marmot, fox and wolves can be seen in coastal areas as well as the open tundra areas of Bristol Bay.
Sport fishing is like none other anywhere else in the US. Alaska hosts all five salmon species as well as trophy Rainbow Trout, Arctic Char, Arctic Grayling, Dolly Vardon, Steelhead, Northern Pike, halibut, rockfish, pacific cod, yellow eye, and black bass just to name a few. Sport fishing on a Sky Trek can be accomplished any style, from deep sea fishing for halibut, cod, rockfish and salmon on a power boat in the ocean to stream fishing walk and wade style fly fishing, or spin casting. While expert anglers enjoy the last frontier we welcome intermediate to novice fishers to learn and hone their skills in the best place on earth to fish (and catch)!
Photographic opportunities are excellent during Sky Trekking adventures. Special interests are pursued. Want to see whales while flying on a Sky Trek? Just ask your pilot, they’ll do all they can to accommodate your wishes. Bear viewing areas are numerous and landing locations many. July, August and September are the best times to view bears congregated in streams feeding on salmon and roaming the beaches in search of food. If you’re lucky you may even find a lone wolf in the stream competing with the bears. Long summer daylight hours offer plenty of time to pursue specific interests.
Photography workshops are available with world re-known photographer Fred Hirschmann as your guide. Photography Sky Treks are offered each summer at different locations for those interested in learning from a master photographer.
